Flat Rock North Telegraph Viaduct area study

Join us as we share our ideas and vision for a redesign of the Flat Rock North Telegraph Viaduct area.

The following set of photos show “before” and potential “after” pictures of what the area could look like, courtesy of the Michigan State University School of Planning, Design and Construction.

We are looking for comments, both positive and negative, to move these design ideas toward a final design to be presented to the community later this summer.

Please don’t just say you like or dislike it, tell us WHY you like or dislike it as this will give the designers an opportunity to incorporate changes into the final design.

We would greatly appreciate your participation and comments.

Please send comments, questions or suggestions to Liz Hendley, Economic Development Director, via e-mail at ehendley@flatrockmi.org.

Note the DEADLINE for comments is Friday, June 24, 2016.

All information will be forwarded to MSU to enhance their design process.

Kind Regards,
Liz

Flat Rock MSU Sustainable Built Environment Initiative – Flat Rock Viaduct

GREAT NEWS! We have received the Sustainable Built Environment Initiative grant through Michigan State University’s School of Planning, Design and Construction. The project was initiated by Flat Rock, Our Hometown’s Design Committee (an Associate Level Michigan Main Street program) which identified this area as an opportunity for making a huge impact in Flat Rock.

The viaduct is currently in poor condition, and traversing the area around it can be difficult if not impossible due to the overgrowth of brush, sediment collection after storms blocking the sidewalks and the general proximity to traffic along Telegraph Road. The Design Committee has already done a great deal of work on what they would like to see in this area, which is why we’ve involved the MSU Team to help us get it on paper and identify potential funding sources.

We feel that bringing stakeholders to the table, including Wayne County, MDOT and the CN Railroad, at the beginning of this process is a far better idea than presenting each with a plan that they’ve had no knowledge on or input to. Participation of other community stakeholders and the public is also extremely vital to this process. While we need to be realistic in our expectations and define constraints as well as opportunities, the end goal is to make this area in Flat Rock more pedestrian friendly, safe and aesthetically welcoming to benefit economic development in the community. Essentially, Flat Rock is the gateway to Wayne County, the connection between Flat Rock’s Downtown and commercial corridor along Telegraph, and first impressions are so crucial!

I would like to personally invite you to our kickoff meeting on Wednesday, February 17, 2016 at 7:00p.m. at the Stone Creek Banquet Hall (Flat Rock Community Center), One McGuire. Flat Rock, MI 48134. We need your input! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me directly.

Kind Regards,
Liz
